Margaux the nine-year-old Poodle wasn’t feeling well, and her owners assumed she had been bitten by a snake. She got a terrible infection in her paw, but they could hardly say what it was from.
They took Margaux to a specialist in Boise, Idaho, and after several visits, they finally got the answers they’d been looking for. Apparently, Margaux had a disease known as diffuse pyogranulomatous inflammation, a condition that has an effect on your immune system.
Her paw gradually got better, but the disease spread to other parts of her body. Sometimes, she looked perfectly healthy, but at other times, she was badly struck by the condition all over again. Over time, the disease went into her eyes. One got so bad that it had to be removed. Sad to say, the same thing happened to her other eye too, leaving her blind.
The worst part of it all? They discovered that Margaux had also become deaf. The Poodle who had once been healthy and happy, who didn’t have a care in the world, was now blind and deaf. Fortunately, however, she has an amazing family – of humans and dogs – to help her live normally.
Her doggy siblings walk Margaux on her leash. Quite literally. They alternately hold the leash in their mouths as they guide their sister while walking. They are practically her seeing eye dogs.
Even though Margaux can’t see or hear, she can still sense all of the love she’s been getting. She still behaves like any other normal dog, and is living her life to the fullest.
Her humans think she relies on something like echolocation (like how bats sense nearby objects) to help her get around. “As far as we can tell, she barks not just when she wants something,” Jordan, her human, said.
Despite all these challenging times, Margaux is still all smiles.
