Sometimes chasing our dreams can get us into tight spots — literally. This is especially true for dogs, who often dream about finally capturing that squirrel or cat… until that critter runs into a little hideaway. Dogs can get so excited that they forget their own size, and end up halfway up a tree or down a hole somewhere.
That was exactly what happened to one Redtick Coonhound named Penny. While chasing after a raccoon, the 5-year-old Penny ran straight into a collapsed drain pipe and immediately got stuck.
To get her out, Penny’s owner had to call in her own unlikely brigade of helpers.
Penny’s family spent hours trying to coax her out, but the poor pup was really wedged in there. They called animal rescue. Since it was already past midnight — and the dog didn’t seem to be injured — rescuers decided to wait until morning to fish her out.
The next day, however, they ran into a problem: Penny was stuck so tightly in the pipe that they couldn’t pull her out with a rope, and the pipe was too small for any adult to climb in. Penny’s owner, Stacy Rickers, even tried using her mini excavator, but to no avail.
That’s when his fiancée’s kids, Doyle “Bubby” Carter and little sister Kailee, had an idea: the two kids easily squeezed inside the pipe and tied a rope around Penny. After 15 hours, the rescue team was finally able to pull her free.
Penny sure was happy! She was treated to a sausage biscuit and tons of water, and she seemed grateful to be out of the muddy pipe and back on dry land.
Her family is ecstatic to have her back!
Penny had one muddy adventure that she will never forget. It took the whole family’s help, but Penny turned out safe and sound. Hopefully she’ll hold off on chasing raccoons into tiny pipes from now on!
